Sofa game

Play the favourite game of our first Far out Guides!

Instructions

  • Split the unit into two teams. Mark the members of the teams in some way so it is obvious who is in which team.
  • Four players, two from each team, sit on the ‘sofa’ which forms one side of a circle. The rest sit on chairs in the circle with one empty chair to the right of the ‘sofa’.
  • The aim of the game is to get four people from your team sat on the ‘sofa’, and all the members of the other team off the ‘sofa’.
  • Everyone writes their name on a piece of paper and folds it in half. All the pieces of paper are put into a hat.
  • Everyone pulls out a piece of paper. They look at it but don’t show anyone else. They are now this person.
  • The person who has the empty chair on their right pats it and chants ‘Mein rechte, rechte Platz ist leer, da wunsch ich mir die (insert name) hier!’ (In English this would be, ‘The chair here on my right is free, I'd like (insert name) to sit next to me’. In the blank they insert the name of a player.
  • Whoever has that name on their piece of paper moves and sits on the chair, they then swap pieces of paper with the person who invited them to sit there and consequently get a new name!
  • There is now a new person with an empty seat on their right hand side, and it is their turn to say, ‘The chair here on my right…’.
  • The idea is that as the game goes on, if they concentrate, the girls will begin to work out who has which name, even though this changes! Slowly you can piece together the names of the people on the ‘sofa’ so that you can invite the members of the opposing team to sit next to you, thus creating a space on the ‘sofa’ for a member of your team to move into.
  • Even without following who's who there is still a chance to win and have a laugh if you pull a member of your team off the sofa. Leaders are very good at doing this, as we tend to let our minds wander elsewhere when playing games!
