Guide's Guide to the Baden-Powell

Rebecca's blog

Hey, my name is Rebecca from 2nd Mirfield guides and I’m here to give you a ‘Guide’s Guide’ to the Baden Powell Award (BP).

I’ll be providing you with a taste of my life in guiding and completing the Baden Powell Award, which I did on Monday 18th October 2008.

I have had loads of fantastic experiences through my Baden Powell. I thought I would share my most recent event and the last clause I completed for my Baden Powell challenge. I chose Zone 3- Discovery Section 6- With friends, attend an event such as a pop or open air concert. I actually changed this clause right at the last minute - don’t worry about changing your original plan, something may come up that offers a new, different approach. In my case it was the BIG GIG 2008.

Unit with Sam and Mark I submitted an entry to a web competition to win backstage passes for myself and my unit. I was thrilled when I made it to the final and won the voting poll! My lovely Leader Wendy told me that it would make a fantastic Baden Powell clause - especially as I was getting very close to fifteen and I still had one clause to go…

The day before Big Gig was my fifteenth birthday, so my fellow guide and good friend Bekki, who has just completed her own BP, slept over. We were so excited about seeing some of our favourite acts perform live!

Early on Saturday morning we got dressed up before meeting the whole district- yes 69 very excitable girls- for the two and a half hour coach ride to Birmingham. Believe me, it was worth it. We arrived at the NEC arena along with thousands of girls just like us. I love meeting other guides from across the country! I treated myself to one of those cute Me to You Guiding bears and an autograph book (:

We had the most amazing seats, seven rows back from the stage all thanks to our Leader Dixie, who organised the whole trip. The fact that we were so close made the concert even better, along with the fantastic music of course. Personally I loved Sugababes, Alphabeat and Scouting for Girls. We were all on our feet for the whole time dancing to the musical talent. The Saturday’s tights were sooo cool- I want a pair in every colour!

After the show we headed backstage to try and spot some celebrities. We had some photos taken with the very handsome Sam and Mark and Leon Jackson! Sam Beeton and Dj Ironic popped over for a chat and The Hooisers gave us a wave. We had a tour of the press room and backstage area. We spotted two of the Saturdays and a guy from Avenue heading off for a spot of lunch, before the second show. All the girls had a fantastic time!

I took some photos during the concert and stuck my review in my Baden Powell scrapbook before it was to be marked at Guides on Monday night.

Catch up with you all soon for the next instalment - it’s like an Eastenders’ cliff hanger!

Lots of love

Rebecca xx
