Tanzania - Rift Valley Masai Trek

In October 2011, members and supporters took
up the challenge to trek the Rift Valley in Tanzania, not just as a
physical challenge for themselves but to raise money for
Girlguiding’s Centenary Fund - distributing
grants to individual girls and young women so they can fulfil
their dreams.
Sixteen participants took part in this
11-day trek through the stunning African landscape and crater
highlands. The group got to meet traditional Masai tribes and
witness their way of life first-hand as the tribesman tended to
their cattle.
Challengers trekked a total of 70km
over the course of five days with treks lasting from seven to
nine hours each day. This trek was considered ‘tough’ as the main
challenge was walking in the midday heat on rough
terrain, ranging from rocky trails, overgrown forest paths and
moorland. But blisters and sore feet were not enough to stop them
from achieving their goals and helping the girls and young women
back in the UK.
On day five of the challenge participants
trekked 12km over eight hours to the summit of Empaakai crater and
explored its soda lake and wildlife before camping on the crater
rim itself. The morning brought a trek to the northern side of the
crater where the group had magnificent views of Oldoinya Lengai,
(the only active sodium carbonate volcano in the world) as they
continued their trek through the African bush and small Masai
village of Nayobi. After a 20km day of trekking the group camped
under the trees of the Acacia Forest to rest for their
next day of descending steeply into the Rift Valley
escarpment.
‘It was a
fantastic challenge, which I’m really glad I participated in.
Emma and Rebecca from Discover Adventure were encouraging and
supportive throughout the challenge and immediately fitted
well with the group – I’d definitely recommend Girlguiding charity
challenges to anyone!’ Helen Myall, Assistant
Leader
‘Badly fitted boots, lots of blisters, but
getting through each day with painful feet was worth it.’
Lorraine Pack, Guide Leader
‘I would say to anyone to go for
it! A challenge of a lifetime, it was such a buzz each day
that we finished. Fundraising was another big achievement and
I am proud of not just myself, but my Rainbows, Brownies and
their parents for their support.’ Lorraine Wells,
Rainbow/Brownie Leader
‘Being with other guiding members meant that we all had
much in common, which gave openings for conversation in the early
stages. The event was very well run, and most
enjoyable.’ Jill Hobbs, District Leader
‘It was the most amazing experience and a great example of
Girlguiding in action. Thank you so much for the wonderful,
wonderful opportunity you gave me!!’ Liz
Burnley, Former Girlguiding Chief Guide
