'I can hardly think of any work more valuable than that of Book Aid International in encouraging the spread of learning and literacy throughout the world. Books are the keys to intellectual and moral freedom.'

Philip Pullman, Author

Book Aid International

Book Aid International is a UK registered charity that works with partners in the world’s poorest countries to support literacy, education, and training. We provide relevant books and information to those in greatest need - so letting people realise their potential and contribute to the development of their communities.

Did you know that eighty million of the world's children do not go to school, and one-fifth of the world's adults, the majority of them women, are illiterate? All these people live in absolute poverty and are effectively excluded from taking control of their lives.

This is why, over the past 54 years, Book Aid International has sent over 25 million books to our partners across the developing world, providing opportunities for millions of people all over the world to access them. Working with a range of partners – including schools, universities, community libraries and refugee camps - Book Aid International supplies up to date, relevant information to those in greatest need.

Our focus is on books because they are vital tools in life-long learning - as the saying goes “Give someone a fish, and you feed them for a day. Teach someone how to fish and you feed them for life.” Books can be shared by many, they last for years and they are robust and easily transported.

Why they want to work with you

We want to help change the world with Girlguiding UK members. Our aims are:

To raise £20,000 which will help us send over 15,000 books to Africa.

To help girls across the UK learn more about life in Africa.

To raise awareness of the importance of literacy and it’s role in eradicating poverty.

To spread the idea of 'Ubuntu'.

To help others and make the world a better place.

'We know that Girlguiding UK members will take on our challenge with determination, enthusiasm and passion and that your Reading Tents will be exciting, fun and very popular. And most importantly will raise lots of money for Book Aid International. We look forward to hearing all about them over the next year!'
