Senior Section members were encouraged to take on the challenge of setting up and running their own business. All funds raised for Barnardo's were directed to local community poverty projects.
The Barnardo's BIS
881 members completed the Barnardo's BIS learned about child poverty in the UK and raising £7,159 for local community poverty projects. 820 signatures were collected for the End Child Poverty petition.
Groups could apply for a business loan by submitting a proposal for how they would use £100 investments and grow it into £500. Any group that succeeded in raising £500 could keep 25 per cent for their own unit. Businesses included the organisation of valentine’s discos and a gift wrapping service.
The Bovey District Ranger Guides set up a card making business. 'Overall we feel that our business was a success and we thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the project,' said one Ranger. 'We were shocked at some of the information we learned from the packs and also from information our Leader found out about local child poverty figures. Making cards was great fun - we learned quite a few new techniques such as embossing and we hope to continue making cards for different events and towards gaining our Look Wider Octant as well!'
You can still download the Barnardo's BIS activity pack from the Barnardo's information page.
