Pixie Lott reveals how girls change the world

Pop sensation and former Brownie Pixie Lott announced the results of the Girlguiding UK: Changing the World in front of 23,000 Guides at Wembley Arena during the Centenary BIG GIG. Pixie revealed that almost 300,000 members of Girlguiding UK took part in Changing the World and challenged themselves to complete a community action project during 2008 – 2009.

'Changing the World - that's some dream!' said Pixie, 'But this Girlguiding UK project shows that lots of small actions - some from some very small people - can add up to big change, not only for the 19 partner charities and the people they help but for the girls taking part too. An awesome achievement - and I just know from my days in Brownies that a lot of fun will have been had on the way while the girls have learnt about some of the big issues facing the world today like poverty and climate change - and of course they've raised a lot of money too.'

Members of Girlguiding UK should be thrilled with their achievements!

Helen Humphreys, Lead Volunteer for Changing the World said, 'Girlguiding UK: Changing the World has been a chance for girls and young women to choose the issues that matter to them most and act to make a real difference. Not only do they know more about our charity partners and the issues that they tackle, they have also through their actions and fundraising made a difference to many young people and their families in the UK and across the world. It’s great legacy to begin our Centenary year with.'

How we changed the world

WaterAid - Members raised over £130,000 which took 8,681 people out of water poverty in Nepal.

Asthma UK - Over 17,000 girls have learnt to deal with an asthma attack emergency and over £76,000 was raised to send children with severe asthma on a holiday where they can learn to manage their condition.

WWF - 32,000 members changed their spending and consumption habits after learning about the impact of their choices on the environment.

Camfed - The lives of more than 2,000 girls in Africa have been transformed because they now have the chance to go to school - members raised over £73,000 to provide essential school-going items like books, stationery, shoes and uniforms.

Every Leader will be receiving a new Changing the World poster in November 2009's edition of guiding magazine. This details all the results and is a unit resource to celebrate our achievements with every unit. If you have the space, display the poster in your meeting place and shout out about how girls + action = Change.

You can find more results from each of our projects by looking at the project results page.
