The Colour of Home
by Mary Hoffman Hassan and his family are driven from their home in Somalia by a civil war. They come to live in the UK. On his first day of school, everything looks grey and miserable compared to the colourfulness of Africa. In one of his classes, he paints a picture of his village. He then paints a second picture which shows the nightmare he faced during the civil war in Somalia. His teacher gets a translator in class for him and he begins to see all the colours in his new life.

Hannah, the Brownie Book Club Editor thinks this...
I chose this book to review because I loved the pictures in it. It is also good for those who have problems reading as the text is nice and big. We all know how scary it is to start at a new school, but imagine starting in a whole new country where you don't speak the language! I feel sorry for Hassan, who has had to leave everything that he knows behind but he is lucky to have most of his family with him.

Anna thinks this...
I liked this book because it helps you understand how children from other countries feel. But I would have liked it more if it was about a girl. I thought the pictures were OK but I like cartoons more.

Caitlin aged eight thinks this...
I like it because it is very colourful. It is sad about the war and his cat. I also like it because he wants to draw a picture of his home.

It's a sad but nice book because it gets you thinking about people who are new to places. I was new a few months ago so I quite like this book. I think it has a very nice ending to it, it's also like a puzzle. It's like a puzzle because every good thing that happens is another colour in his new life.
