1. Choose and carry out three of the following investigations. For each one you should keep a record of what you did and what you observed. Explain to the tester what you have found out from your results.
*Grow some salt crystals. Try making crystals using sugar. Talk with the tester about other materials that are crystals.
*Make bubble wands and bubble mix. Show how to make different bubble size and shapes.
*Test the different food dyes on sugar-coated sweets using chromatography.
*Make a set of coloured pastels. Explain what ingredients were used and how to make different colours and shades.
*Make natural dyes from vegetables and fruit. Dye some cotton fabric and know how to stop the dye from running when the fabric is washed.
*Make an acid indicator using red cabbage. Test the following items:
– sugar
– lemonade
– orange juice or apple juice
– toothpaste
– yoghurt
– vinegar
*Make a musical instrument and play a tune. Describe how you can make different notes and the sound louder or quieter.
*Plant some seeds in an eggshell and record what happens as they grow.
*Make a magnetic maze. Describe what happens if you use objects made from:
– wood
– iron
– paper
– aluminium
– two materials of your choice.
*Make a balloon rocket and explain how it works.
*Using a small magnet, make your own compass. Use it to direct someone North, South, East or West.
*Build a waterproof shelter. Record what types of materials worked best to stop you getting wet.
Do one of the following and talk with the tester about it.
*Visit a museum, science centre, zoo, botanic garden, aquarium, science festival or other place that has a science exhibition.
*Find out about the discoveries of two scientists and how their work affects our lives.
