Brownsea Island, the birthplace of Guiding
and Scouting, is set in Poole Harbour, Dorset. It is managed by
the National Trust and consists of 500 acres of wild woodland.
Opened in 2007, the Baden-Powell Outdoor Centre on the
south-west corner of the island provides 50 acres of camping. There
is indoor hostel accommodation for up to 24 people in South Shore
Lodge. In addition to toilets, showers and amenities, you will
find the new Scout and Guide Trading Post and Heritage Centre,
which is staffed daily by volunteers.
Opening times
The island is open from the beginning of April until the end of
October (for camping, until the end of September).

Boats to Brownsea Island
Boats run frequently from Poole and Sandbanks throughout the
season. Contact the ferry companies direct for bookings and
information – their contact details are shown below. Group
discounts are available with special rates for campers.
Please note that there are restrictions on the carrying of luggage
and equipment.
Both the National Trust and the ferry companies now operate cargo
boats to transport all your equipment. It is important that
you discuss your needs with the National Trust and/or ferry
companies in advance of your visit.
