Using the Story Bank
Writing
We recommend that you type your story offline first into
Microsoft Word or another word processing package and then copy and
paste it into the online submission form when you are ready. You
might need to get someone to help you with typing and uploading
your story especially if you are under the age of 16 years as you
will need your parent’s permission to upload content to the
site.
Story details
The site has been designed around six broad
themes which will help to structure your thoughts on submitting a
story. Although there is no word limit on any story, you may find
it easier to submit several stories under different themes, time
periods or events rather than one long story. This will also make
it easier for users of the site to search, read and enjoy the
stories you submit.
Dos and Don’ts
All stories will be moderated prior to
publication on the site.
- Do make sure you include some detail about the location, event
or time period involved.
- Don’t include the exact details of meeting places and times or
any personal information (such as surnames, addresses). If
included, these will be removed at the moderation stage.
- Do add ‘colour’ to your stories by describing the people and
places involved.
But please be respectful of other users and
don’t add stories which may cause upset or offence. Use of
offensive or inappropriate language will not be tolerated and will
be removed.

Scanning photos
We would love for you to share your
photographs with us especially if they relate to you as a member of
guiding or the story you’ve told. Think about which photo will best
show what you are describing, remembering that once published, the
image will be 235px wide. This means that photos will be reduced to
fit to this width on the page and some details in a photo may
become difficult to see. When scanning in a photo or image it is
best to scan it at 72dpi before uploading it to the Story Bank.
Uploading media files
You can record audio or video to accompany
your story. We would recommend that audio clips be no longer
than five minutes in length. For video files they should
be no longer than ten minutes and no larger than 10mb.
You must have the permission of those in the
photograph or video before uploading it to the website.
‘Report this story’ facility
Please don't abuse the ‘report this story’ facility. It exists
to enable visitors to let us know about content which breaks these
rules. Please do not use the ‘report this story’ facility to alert
us to multiple postings, spelling mistakes and so on.
