Ultimate Lapland

Friday 2 April
We all survived the night in the snow lodge.
On the way to the airport we visited Santa, which was slightly
surreal as all the elves wished us 'Happy Easter' on the way
out!
It was then time to fly home, having had a very memorable
week.
It really was the ultimate Lapland adventure!
Thursday 1 April
We had a great time building a kota and a camp
fire, on which we cooked pancakes and toasted marshmallows.
A dip in the ice hole was an experience! Very
cold but the sauna was hot.
We all looked forward to a night in the snow
lodge (aka giant igloo). Once kitted out with thermal sleeping bags
it was quite warm and just like being in an Icelandic tent (apart
from the ice walls and the ice beds).
Wednesday 31 March
We continued our adventure on snowmobile, intending to
snowmobile across the frozen sea to the Ice Breaker boat.
Unfortunately, due to lots of fresh snow and the warm conditions,
the snow had started to melt and the snowmobiles kept getting
stuck, preventing us from meeting the boat.
These implications did not dampen our spirits
and we had a relaxing afternoon, including an Easter egg hunt and a
sauna, all ready for the next day.
Tuesday 30 March 2010
Meatballs for breakfast.
Reindeer sleigh ride then lunch in a Kotta,
followed by lessons in lassoing and harnessing reindeer.
Then off to the husky farm and
waist-deep in snow. Met the huskies and given instructions on
how to dog sleigh, or in some cases be dragged through the snow
face-down.
Sauna and dinner in the hotel.

We flew out on a nice big plane to Helsinki, then a little
propeller plane to Kemi (Lapland). On arrival, we kitted
out in safari suites (aka giant romper suites).
Trip to the Snow Castle stopping off at the
frozen harbour. Fantastic hot chocolate, tour of the castle
including the ice beds – even in the honeymoon suite. Finished
off with a three-course meal served on ice tables!
