Welcome to Far out Guides, the further afield sister to Unit cam! We thought it only fair to give Guide units outside the UK an opportunity for some fame and fabulousness too. For us, it’s an opportunity to be nosy and find out exactly what our guiding friends get up to elsewhere! Our second unit to take part is the 1st and 2nd Jakarta Guides from Indonesia.
Can you tell us an amazing fact about where you live?
- Indonesia has the largest Muslim population and also the greatest number of volcanoes in the world. It's home of the Komodo dragon and the Orangutan!
Can you teach us a game, song or activity from your country?
- We have been learning Indonesia Raya (Great Indonesia), the Indonesian National Anthem as well as God save the Queen for our Traditions in Guiding badge.
What’s the best thing about boys not being around?
- It gives us the chance to say what is on our mind. We can also make our own decisions without boys bossing us around.
- Tropical Survivor or Gardening.
If you could invent a badge, what would it be for?
What kind of trips have you done outside your unit meeting place?
- Overnight camps at school, weekend camps in the countryside just outside of Jakarta at Lido lakes. We also joined 1st Wessex Guides at their Singapore camp. For Thinking Day we took local children to a waterpark and 2nd Jakarta Guides are going bowling.
What has your unit done that you’re most proud of?
- Setting up camp in the rainy season and we survived! We have also made cakes and sold them to raise money for the World Thinking Day fund.
What are your Leaders like?
- They are kind, fun and organised. They rock!
Is there anything you would like to say to all the Guides reading the website in the UK?
- Indonesia isn't just a bunch of islands; it's really interesting and has lots of culture and cute animals too!
